Q. Can J draw and paint from my photographs?
A. Yes! The artist has been creating portraits from photographs for over 30 years, and this is the way he prefers to work. J can create your art from your existing photos or he can arrange for photographs to taken for you.

Q. How do I know if my photos are good enough for him to use?
A. His best results come from either professional photographs or clear, close-up snapshots. He is happy to review your photos ahead of time and determine whether they will be a suitable reference. When selecting your pictures, keep in mind that the more detail that is in your photos, the more detail J can include in your drawing or painting.

Q. Can you use separate photographs and draw them into one portrait?
A. J is happy to blend multiple photographs and create a one-of-a-kind portrait for you.

Q. How will I know what the drawing will look like?
A. Your happiness is J's top priority. He offers you a layout preview of your drawing or painting before he begins working. You will have the opportunity to preview and approve the composition, placement of subjects, font choices (if applicable) and more.

Q. What is his turn-around time?
A. J typically completes drawings within 2 weeks, while paintings are usually finished within a month to a month and a half. Please let J know if you have a specific deadline, and he will do his best to make sure you receive your portrait in time. The Christmas season is his busiest time of the year, so please provide as much notice as possible if you will be commissioning a portrait near the Holidays.

Q. What mediums does J use?
A. Most of his drawings are created with charcoal; it's richer and more beautiful than graphite and produces very realistic drawings. Charcoal is also one of the most long-lasting and permanent substances on earth, so you can be sure that your drawing will not fade over time. For paintings, J uses Grumbacher and Windsor & Newton oils. His drawings and paintings are of the finest quality, so only the best materials will do!

Q. How do I get my photographs to J?
A. Photos may be sent via mail or email. Once he receives them, he will contact you to discuss sizing, pricing and other options such as extra prints and matting or framing your portrait.

Q. Can J provide custom framing as well?
A. Matting and framing services are available to all of J's clients. You may choose the option you think is best, or he can provide you with recommended selections. As the artist, J often knows how to best present your drawing or painting. If you are unsure about what you want, let him take the guesswork out of the process and create a beautiful package for you.

Q. I don't live in Leesburg, Virginia. Can I still hire J to do a portrait for me?
A. Much of J's work is commissioned from people who live out-of-state, or even out of the country! He is happy to correspond with you through phone or by e-mail during all stages of the process. After your portrait is completed and you have given your approval, he will carefully package it and ship it to you with insurance.

Not included in the price of the artwork; framing, shipping/crating, out of town travel/living expenses, and sales tax, if required.
